Lost and Found

Have you ever lost anything of importance? Of course you have; we all have. It’s a part of life. If you never got it back, you may still carry a twinge of remorse. Something special is gone and you miss it to this day.

On the other hand, have you ever found something important you lost? Isn’t that the greatest feeling? It happened once to me. During the time I lived in Southern California, I drove over to the coast one warm Saturday afternoon, selecting Leo Carrillo State Beach as my destination. As I meandered down the pathway from my parked truck, the wind was blowing wildly and a particle of dirt, or sand was thrown into my right eye.

Not only was it painful but I also couldn’t see well. So, I crouched down behind some bushes, took out my contact lens, cleaned it with my tank top and attempted to place it back in my eye. Right at that very moment, an erratic gust of wind blew the lens off the tip of my finger. I immediately fell to my hands and knees fervently praying that God would help me find it. As I prayed and combed the sand with my fingers, the consequences of this loss began to loom before me. Since I would not be able to drive home without my contact (my vision is that bad!) I would have to call someone to drive all the way from the inland city where I lived, to pick me up, then turn around and take me back.

Freaked out!

Once at home, I had an extra lens but no vehicle. So, I would have to get another ride back to the beach, one hour away, get my truck and return home. And what if I couldn’t find anyone at home? I’d have to call the police!  The thought of all this freaked me out, so I prayed harder. And God answered. There was my tiny, blue lens, amidst the rocks and sand, and I squealed for joy! Thank you God!

Jesus once shared a parable about a lost coin. The woman who lost it searched and swept every nook and cranny of her house until it was found. And when she found it she called her friends and neighbors and they celebrated together. Jesus told this parable to demonstrate what the Son and the Father are like. They are searching diligently for lost people and rejoicing, throwing a party even, when they are found!

If you have wandered away from God, or perhaps you’ve never known your Creator, rest assured, God is looking for you! You are very special to the Almighty, very valuable. The Lord misses you desperately and longs for you to come home.

"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin'"(Luke 15:8,9).
