Out of the Dark

On November 13, 1857, the Boston Globe headlines read: “ENERGY CRISIS LOOMS.” The subheading said: “World May Go Dark since Whale Blubber So Scarce.” Evidently this energy thing is nothing new. It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious!

In 2014 we face an energy crisis of much greater proportions. Our energy needs have changed but our dependence upon the earth for fuel has not changed. And with each passing year we continue to deplete our natural resources to keep the lights burning in our homes, businesses and churches. Beyond the essentials, many are willing to trade our virgin spaces for lavishly lit casinos, strip malls and amusement parks. Unless we find cleaner sources of energy that are renewable, we’re headed for catastrophic problems.

Likewise, we experience an energy shortage in our spiritual lives when we squander our resources on pursuits that are trivial and shallow. Vacant entertainment, empty chatter, and mindless living lead to serious spiritual blackouts that immobilize us against the prince of darkness. Our only hope is in finding an eternally renewable source of Divine power!

Realignment Needed

Realigning our lives with God’s purposes connects us with this Power (Jesus Christ). If there is an energy crisis in our personal lives and churches it isn’t God fault! Scripture says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). With such a promise in hand we should be daily praying for God’s Spirit to fill us with new energy!

Notice what the power is for. “…and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The power God gives is not to be selfishly consumed while so many are left in darkness. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

From time to time the lights may go out in your neighborhood due to a shortage of electricity. But this doesn’t mean that you and those around you have to be in the dark!
