Cold Feet

Have you ever failed to keep a promise? In April 2005, 32-year-old Jennifer Wilbanks of Duluth, Georgia, decided she couldn't go through with her elaborate wedding, so she ran away--some 1,500 miles away to Las Vegas, Nevada. According to her fiance, John Mason, she went for a jog on Tuesday evening and never returned. It wasn't until the following Saturday morning (her wedding day) that she showed up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, tired and regretful. Saturday morning she called her fiance and told him she had been abducted.

According to CNN News, "It took only a few hours of questioning for authorities to learn the truth: Wilbanks left on her own, just before her wedding, which included 14 bridesmaids and 14 groomsmen. A reception was planned at the swank Atlanta Athletic Club."1 Some say she became overly stressed about the wedding, got cold feet, and ran away. On Saturday, the day that was supposed to be her wedding, she was reportedly 1,000 miles away, wandering around without any money.

There are many things in life to be afraid of--poor grades, loss of emplyment, flying, divorce, certain people, difficult circumstances, sickness, and death (for starters). Your fears may differ from those that plague other people, but the fact is everybody struggles with something. Whatever you struggle with, Jesus is ready to face it with you. He can do this because He faced the ultimate fear--eternal separation from God!

Ready to Face Death

Thankfully, Jesus didn't get cold feet as He stood on Golgotha, ready to be nailed to the cross for our sins! And from this victory we can draw strength to face whatever life brings. Jesus says,

"My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!" (Luke 12:4, 5)

In other words, fear those who are able to steal your affections from heavenly things; fear those who tempt you to ignor, or reject God's free gift of eternal life.
