Nothing to Dread

“There they were, overwhelmed with dread when there was nothing to dread.” Psalm 53:5
My stomach was in a huge knot and my palms were sweating heavily. How was I ever going to get through this? I sat like a statue staring at the speaker before me who was launching into her presentation wholeheartedly. Maybe she would talk a long time and I could get by with saying only a few sentences. But even then, everyone would be looking at me, critiquing my choice of words, my delivery. Time seemed to stand still as I miserably sat there, dreading my turn, and at the same time chastising myself for being so weak and fearful. Why was I so nervous? It wasn’t THAT important of a speech. Why was I so “overwhelmed with dread when there was nothing to dread”?

Maybe the answer goes back to verse one:”The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” We may not actually say that, or even consciously think it. But if we feel that God doesn’t notice or care about the situations we‘re facing the result is the same—dread. We live in the fear of man instead of the fear of the Lord, meaning that we base our feelings and self concepts on what we believe other people think of us instead of what the Bible says God thinks of us. You are the apple of God’s eye (Zechariah 2:8), like a favored son or daughter—an only child. God has loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). The plans God has for you are to prosper you and give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). God will never fail you or forsake you (Joshua 1:5).
Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” If our focus is on eternal things we will realize the importance of seeking God’s approval, not that of other people. And when we trust totally in God we will see ourselves as God sees us and believe that God always has our best interest in mind. Nothing can come to us that God does not allow or has not already provided for. Believing this day by day, we truly will have nothing to dread.
