The Counterfeit
Photo: John Hughes
Today, I was surprised to learn of a sham sweeping through my small town. Bogus $100 bills are being passed on the streets of the city. And, apparently they look just like the real thing.

This “illegal tender” is manufactured from real $5 bills, which have been bleached to remove all ink, leaving blank currency paper. A $100 bill is then scanned and copied onto the denuded greenbacks.

The bills will pass the “Counterfeit Pen” test because they are actual bills. The only way to detect this simulated money is to be knowledgeable about the details. The phony dough sports a Franklin photograph but still carries a Lincoln watermark.

It’s difficult to spot an imposter if you don’t know what to look for.

As I pass through the check out counter to purchase my groceries, I occasionally glance at the tabloids for entertainment. More than once bold headlines have proclaimed, JESUS SPOTTED IN THE DESERT! or, THE MESSIAH LANDS IN NEW YORK CITY! Is this merely fabrication designed to sell papers, or could it be true? Most of us don’t live by these cheesy rags but what if you saw this on the nightly news, complete with video footage? Would that strengthen the validity of the story?

God being all knowing addressed this question in the Bible. In the book of Matthew, chapter 24, Jesus told the disciples, “Don’t let anyone mislead you. For many will come in my name saying, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will lead many astray…”(vs.4-5). Jesus goes on to say (in vs. 26) “So, if anyone tells you, ‘Look, the Messiah is out in the desert, don’t believe it!” The book of Matthew continues to reveal that when God returns it will be a global event that everyone alive will witness. Therefore, if you have to read about it in the papers or catch it on TV, it’s not for real!

Since imposters will come and go in God’s name, the key in recognizing the fraudulent imitation from the authentic Messiah is to get to know the Lord now, and familiarize yourself with the enlightenment found in the Bible.
