I’m Not Afraid

Kelsey’s fingers curl around my hand as we walk toward the horses. We get closer and her grip tightens. I hear her softly repeating, “I’m not afraid.” My two-year-old granddaughter has reason to be frightened. The horses are very big and she is very small, but I will not let go of her hand. I will make sure she doesn’t go where she can get hurt. I will keep her safe.

When we get close to the corral, I scoop her up in my arms and show her how she can touch the horses’ soft noses. Her fear forgotten, she giggles when they acknowledge her with soft knickers. I set her down on a nearby hay bale and she watches intently as I pour feed in each horse’s bucket. Then I take an apple from my pocket and show her how she can feed Sparky (our pony) by placing the apple flat on her hand and letting him take it.

She is delighted when he eagerly seizes the apple and eats it. She takes my hand again as we walk back to the house and I make her promise not to go pet the horses unless her granddaddy or I am with her. She is quiet for a moment and then, understanding why, she responds, “Because you couldn’t hold my hand.”

Inside We are Terrified

Sometimes we feel like Kelseyvery small, surrounded with big problems. We tell ourselves we are not afraid, but inside we are terrified. The Bible tells us in Psalms 139; 8-10, "if I ascend into heaven you are there. If I make my bed in hell, behold you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea. Even then your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me."

Sometimes when I’m holding Kelsey’s hand, she sees something that excites her and tries to pull away. I kneel beside her and explain why I can’t let her go. I will not always need to hold her hand. As she grows up she will need to face life’s challenges on her own. Just as in all of our lives, there will be good times and there will be problems. But whatever the circumstances I know she can say with confidence “I’m not afraid” as long as she holds to the Savior’s handa hand that will never let her go.

I am thankful that He is holding each one of us today.
