Friends. Those irreplaceable special people in our lives. They bring joy, memories, and special times into our days. But what if you don’t have any friends? Maybe you are lonely, and miss having those special comrades in your life. Maybe you blame it on your shyness, or maybe you don’t know any people your age near where you live. Many people can find themselves in this position, and want to find a remedy.

Let me share with you some things that I have found.

Today was the first week of school at the college I’m attending, so I’ve been pondering the subject of friends. A couple days ago, a verse from the Bible popped into my head about this very subject. It says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly” (Proverbs 18:24). Basically it’s saying, “the way to make friends is to be friendly yourself” So evaluate how you act in different circumstances and make a point to show a friendly smile or cheery word. That will go a long way to make a friend.

Gain Wisdom

Another thing we must consider, is that a friend does not have to be our own age. A lot of times as children, teenagers, or young adults, we think that the only way we can have fun, is to hang out with people our own age. This is not true at all. It can be a definite blessing and joy to have a friend that is older than yourself. It is an opportunity to gain wisdom and advice that we otherwise wouldn’t have.

Also we must not forget that our parents and siblings should be our friends. Yes, they’re family, but they also should be our friends. Instead of constantly finding disagreements to argue about, build lasting memories by doing things together, and making a point to spend time talking. Sometimes in the evenings when my family is all together, we start reminiscing about the past. As we smile and laugh about bygone days, it bonds our hearts together, and draws us closer to each other.

So go out, find some friends, and you will reap many blessings.
