God's Block Heater

Winter mornings move slowly in North Dakota, especially when it’s colder than usual. I well remember one icy day at 7 a.m. when the temperature was 30 below zero with a 20 mph wind. With a thermometer reading like this, it’s no wonder that my vehicle refuses to turn over.

On these mornings, I’m thankful that our vehicle has a block heater installed. This device gently warms up the engine block and gets the oil flowing smoothly for better cranking. It operates on household electricity, and it’s saved me time and effort on more than one occasion.

Even hotels in North Dakota have outdoor receptacles to plug into so that cold travelers can get a good start in the morning. For those guests who don’t have this handy device installed, it can be troublesome and nearly impossible to get the vehicle going.

I find that my life is often like my car when I wake up in the morning. It’s difficult to start and get moving in a forward direction. That’s why I’m grateful for God’s “spiritual block heater”…prayer. When I wake up I often lie in bed and talk with my Creator; thanking the Almighty for a good nights rest, and requesting a day that is blessed from above.

Headed in the Right Direction

I never know what the day’s events will bring, but through the gift of prayer, I can gain the strength and courage to face it, knowing that Someone bigger than myself is in control of whatever happens. When my spiritual “engine” is finally warmed up, I can move forward into another day of life, confident that I am headed in the right direction.

The Bible says that Jesus often found a solitary place to commune with the Father.
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35).

As I follow the example of Christ, I discover that plugging in the “block heater” of prayer to my Maker gets my spiritual engine warmed up for another day. Fact is I need it…in any kind of weather!
