Babylon Today

If you travel today about 45 miles south of Baghdad, Iraq, you’ll come to Babylon. Babylon is the most famous ancient city in the world. Its ruins today give visitors a glimpse of the grandeur of this once-great civilization. It was the capital of the world-ruling empire over 500 years before the time of Christ. Babylon reached the height of its power during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, 605-563 B.C. You can read the thrilling story of this great world empire in the first five chapters of the book of Daniel.

The Bible also predicted the downfall and future of Babylon. “And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms…will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited…But wild beasts of the desert will lie there…The hyenas will howl in their citadels, and jackals in their pleasant palaces” (Isaiah 13:19-22). Has this happened?

Some years ago, Iraq’s ruler styled himself as the successor to King Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon’s ancient ruler. He even struck a commemoratory gold medal depicting himself and Nebuchadnezzar. He made plans to rebuild Babylon, and make it a world-famous tourist attraction. In the plans were luxurious hotels, restaurants, a beautiful palace, plus other attractions. Construction was started, but was halted by the Persian Gulf War. The site was used as a military staging area. All ideas of a tourist attraction were abandoned.

A Prophecy Fulfilled

The Bible predicted that Babylon would never be rebuilt. That wild animals would be the only permanent inhabitants. Visitors to the ruins of ancient Babylon today find it exactly as the Bible predicted. God’s word has stood throughout these 2,500 years of history.

The Bible contains many other predictions as well as promises. When God says something, you can count on it. You can believe and put your trust in God and His word.
