Trip of a Lifetime

We loved going camping. It was a hobby I’d brought from my family of origin as I remembered many happy trips to Ocean City, Maryland, and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Once married and with children of my own, we continued the tradition. There was always a lot of fun, but I never realized how much work there was to do until I had to plan and organize and pack it myself.

The prelude to any trip took a team effort and countless steps. I made lists and checked them twice, took trips to the grocery store for supplies and created a mountain of tents, sleeping bags and camping accoutrements.

Not every trip was smooth sailing. Sometimes we’d get lost on the way or once there, realize we’d forgotten the salt and the matches. No matter how well we planned, there was usually a mini crisis or two. But, the better we planned, the better our trip went.

Ultimate Planner

That works for our role as parents, too. And fortunately for us, we’re not charting it alone. The Ultimate Planner has us in His hands. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “ plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Using the analogy of the camping trip, forethought and planning also makes the journey into parenting go smoother. And when that blessed day arrives and we bring home our bundle of joy, we’ll stand over his or her crib and cry tears of joy, thanking God for such a precious child. Weeks later, when grandmother’s gone home, after interrupted sleep, lost pacifiers, and full laundry baskets, we may stand and cry again – wondering if there was a mix-up at the hospital. This can’t possibly be the baby we prayed for.

It’s easy to get off kilter and discouraged and exhausted. We may even temporarily lose our way, but all is not lost on this road to parenting. God’s GPS (Godly Positioning System) will always get us back on track.
