Enjoy the Journey

Water cooler discussions often center around drive time. Our early morning drives are often fraught with slow-downs, accidents and/or closed lanes. It’s pretty grim when, even before you walk into a busy office, your nerves are frayed and you’re grumpy. While everyone else experiments with different routes, I’m sticking with mine. It’s not the fastest or the shortest, but it makes me happy.

I live in St. Louis, Missouri, with landmarks that are recognizable around the world: the mighty Mississippi and the Gateway Arch. My route takes me north alongside the Mississippi as I pass dozens of barges carrying merchandise that will be distributed all around the globe. Through my windshield, I keep the spectacular Arch in view, until I head a short distance east to drive slowly through gorgeous Forest Park. There are fountains and water features on both sides and a glimpse of the construction of the new polar bear habitat at the St. Louis Zoo.

I'm Grateful

I’m grateful for my comfortable paid-for car. For covered parking at work. For my job in this tenuous economy. And … for the journey.

We’re all on a life journey and at the end of that journey, each of us has a belief of what comes next. There are some religious groups that are certain that when they take their last breath – it’s truly the end. There’s no promise of an afterlife, so they try to make the best of this life.

How thankful I am that my God has promised me something beyond my life here on earth. He’s promised a home with Him forever, but He also wants me to enjoy the journey. He told me so.

“Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life” (Ecclesiastes 5:18).
