Hunger and Thirst

Do you enjoy memorizing Scripture or like me, do you still have good intentions about delving deeply into it? There is one text I've had in my memory for years and I have come to appreciate it more lately. I want to “soak it up” by sharing it here.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

The reason the verse means more to me today than it did yesterday is because I heard evidence of what “hungering and thirsting” after righteousness really is!

Last night, my sister called from India, where she is working with a missionary group sharing the Gospel with the people there. Even in our very brief conversation, I felt Cheryl’s awe at how enthusiastic (putting it mildly) the people there are to hear the gospel.

To show their deep gratitude to the messengers of the good news of salvation through Jesus, the Indian people treat the missionaries like royalty. They carry their umbrellas for them, they constantly give them food, they sit on the ground at the meetings, making sure the missionaries all have plastic chairs.

The people that Cheryl’s group is working with are very poverty-stricken and of the lowest social class. They are, in fact, known as “the untouchables.” So you can imagine how happy they are to be “touched” not only by the wonderful news of Jesus, but also by the messengers of Jesus. They go up to the missionaries, take their hand and place it on their heads, asking them to pray for them. They are never late to the Bible meetings, and they do not have excuses why they can’t come! Imagine that!

When they dedicate one of their new churches, there is a huge celebration and a parade of people and vehicles filled with passengers just to witness the event. Hungering and thirsting! Hungering and thirsting for righteousness. They can’t get enough.

What about us? There are a lot of things that we hunger for in life, but is righteousness at the top of our list? I'm asking God to truly give me more and more hunger pangs for the Bread of Life and thirst for the water of the Holy Spirit.

Then, finally, in God’s time, we will meet together at the throne and experience together the blessing of being “filled.”

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).
