Happy Dependence Day

Happy 4th of July! Today America celebrates gaining her independence in 1776. It’s a day spent enjoying family barbecues, camping trips, parades, flags, and of course, fireworks displays.

You may notice that I titled this article Happy Dependence Day. It’s not a mistake. I chose this title for a reason. Because even though we may celebrate America’s independence once a year, we can celebrate our dependence on Jesus every day! And in a very real sense, dependence on Him gives us true freedom.

Jesus said in John 8:34-36, “ ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ ”

According to this text, when we sin we’re not free, but slaves to that sin. It rules over us. It controls us. And then it leaves us feeling guilty, ashamed, and full of regrets. But because Jesus died to forgive our sins, His forgiveness is our freedom: freedom from guilt, freedom from hurting ourselves, freedom from hurting others, and freedom from eternal death.

Fresh Start

By spending daily time with Jesus, we can break free from the Devil—no longer under sin’s control. Sure, we still feel tempted at times, and may even give into temptation. But we don’t have to be a slave to sin. Instead, we go to the Giver of freedom—Jesus. And when we confess, we are cleansed! Free! And then we get a fresh start.

There are many other things that we depend on when Jesus is in our lives. We depend on Him to listen when we pray. We depend on Him to see from beginning to end, and choose what’s best for us. We depend on Him to prepare a place for us in Heaven. We depend on Him to resurrect our loved ones who have died. And we depend on Him to come again and take us back with Him.

Sounds pretty great to be dependent, doesn’t it? I’ll take that kind of dependence any day!
