Love Notes

Occasionally I travel a distance away from home, and I am quite often in a position where I need to pack a bag or two because I’ll be staying overnight in a hotel. During these times of aloneness my spirits are buoyed by something extra in my luggage; a love note from my spouse, folded and resting on the clothing that I have packed. She secretly slips this little message of love into my suitcase right before I leave.

Don’t misunderstand me, we say our usual good-byes and I kiss her and the children before I head out, but these love notes are something extra special and I look forward to reading each one carefully as I unpack my bags.  They’re short and to the point, but they have a wonderful impact on my stay at the hotel. They convey a message of caring, concern, and devotion, and my trip doesn’t seem as arduous when I find them. I know that I will soon be headed back home and that someone who loves me waits for my return.

God's Love Notes

In the same way that I enjoy these little messages from my wife, I also look forward with anticipation to God’s “love notes” that were sent to me through the pages of the Bible. My heart is warmed by messages like: “I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!” (Jeremiah 31:3,The Message/Remix), and “…Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5,NIV).

In the final analysis, I’m just a traveler here on planet earth. My eternal destination is to be with my Creator, and to make my home in a place where good-byes are a thing of the past. But while I journey, my spirits are lifted by God’s “love notes.” Like the messages from my wonderful spouse, these too convey a message of caring, concern and undying devotion to my heart. I don’t want to travel without them.
