What Would Jesus Do?

You see the slogan, What Would Jesus Do (WWJD), on bumper stickers, key chains, and T-Shirts. A few weeks ago the church I attend started reading the book, In His Steps, by Charles M. Sheldon. Sheldon a minister/writer addressed the WWJD concept in a personal way in his 1896 manuscript. After contemplating his slogan, I often question myself as to my own actions and occasionally, I notice the people around me and how they address this concept as well.

I sometimes sit at the front desk of the ER and admit people for our emergency services in the small community in which I live. Since reading Sheldon's book I observe people and how they handle life's situations with the WWJD concept in mind

The other night a young woman brought an elderly lady to the ER who she'd found out walking down the road. The elderly lady seemed confused and wasn't sure where she lived. The young woman could have just driven on. But instead she brought the woman to the ER and stayed with her in the lobby until a deputy was able to arrive and take the lady home.

Take her Place

Later that same night I observed another example. It was a busy night at the ER. We had everything from toothaches to heart attacks coming at us in droves! This put us a bit behind. Because of this there was quite a wait period. One woman watched as I helped a couple clean up their small child who had just vomited in our lobby. She came up to me and asked me to allow the child to take her place and she would take the child's place so the child could be seen more quickly.

You could have heard a pin drop when this dear soul offered to allow the little girl her space in line. Everyone stopped to look at the woman who had made this offer. In my mind I could almost see a recording angel stop what he was doing and use his celestial pen to record the good deed just as it had been carried out.

I'd like to say that I see more behavior like this in myself and others, but I guess human nature sometimes gets in the way. But when I do see this WWJD behavior it sure is a breath of fresh air.

So our faces are not covered. They show the bright glory of the Lord, as the Lord’s Spirit makes us more and more like our glorious Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Just think what would be the outcome if each of us would observe Jesus’s example!
