A Lie is a Lie

It happened often when my daughter was young. I would be in the middle of a particularly delightful story when Joelle would interrupt me and let everyone in my circle know that what I’d just said wasn’t the truth. She would then set the story straight and I would end up stuttering.

Lie or exaggeration? After all, I’m a writer. It’s my job to take an anecdote and give it life -- to make it more interesting than the bare facts. But it’s also my job to make sure the end story is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But somehow, this didn’t translate to conversations among friends when I wanted to impress. Although I thought my daughter was cheeky and I’d taught her that interrupting adults was not appropriate, she was right. I was not telling the truth. What kind of role model was I for my daughter?

Ananias and Sapphira

Many people in the Bible were caught in lies with a variety of consequences. Abraham and Sarah both lied. Abraham lied to Pharaoh and to Abimelech and then Sarah lied to God. Jacob lied to Isaac and Isaac lied to Abimelech and then Jacob’s sons lied to him. One of the most spectacular lies led to the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira. In that case, we’re not even told they spoke a lie – just lied by omission.

By our speech are we causing our children to follow our attitude of deceit as happened in Isaac’s family, or to our spouse as in the case of Ananias and Sapphira and Abraham and Sarah? There are harsh words in the Bible about liars: “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
