Scalpel of Love

Some time ago a news blurb caught my attention. Police in Florida reported a woman accused of stealing a 1.5-carat diamond ring, had been forced by nature to give up the evidence. Surveillance cameras caught her popping the band of gold into her mouth at a jewelry store in a shopping mall. She was arrested and hauled off to jail where she denied ingesting the ring. However, an X-ray revealed it was inside her. She remained under observation in her cell until the diamond passed through her digestive system.

As a kid, one of my favorite movies was The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, starring Ray Milland. Milland plays Dr. James Xavier who invents a serum to improve human vision. When his funding runs out, he begins experimenting on himself. Subsequently, he is able to see right through people, accurately diagnosing their every illness. Next, he rolls in the bucks in Vegas by reading the hand of the blackjack dealer. Using more and more serum, Dr. X is ultimately driven mad because he sees “too much.”

Gratefully, such a serum does not exist and you and I are spared the torment of seeing “too much” in each other, or being seen “too much” by others. God, amazingly, sees it all and loves us still.

Heart Transformation

God knows us intimately and sees us through and through. In some ways this is a comforting thought because we all long to be known. In other ways it is terrifying for there are things we all wish to hide. But thankfully, the God who searches our hearts is also the Master heart surgeon. If we yield ourselves to the Lord’s scalpel, the Bible reveals God will take away our hearts of stone and give us tender hearts instead (Ezekiel 11:19). And, through the Creator’s transforming power our hearts will begin to resemble the heart of God.
