Forever Young

My kids tease me about getting gray hairs. I keep denying that I have any. “It’s just some specks from when I painted the living room,” or “You’re just seeing a piece of thread,” or “It’s just the lighting in the room.” According to the mirror, I’m losing the battle and need to own up to those “well-earned” gray hairs. (I haven’t resorted to pulling them out or getting “assistance” from outside sources!)

People long to discover the fountain of youth and drink deeply of some magical potion that will keep them young forever. Cosmetic companies and plastic surgeons make fortunes off people seeking to slow the slide toward the grave. Nobody in their right mind wants to age and eventually die. God put something within us that knows death is the enemy and gray hairs are reminders that youth is not eternal.

One cold and windy afternoon while preaching a graveside service for two teens (a brother and a sister) killed in a car accident, I began by looking into the eyes of the parents and saying, “This is not God’s plan. The Lord never intended for any of us to die but to be forever young.” Even though Satan has led us to believe the lie that we will never die, the evidence is all around us (and on top of our own heads!).

Changed the Inevitable

Jesus came and changed the inevitable slide toward the cemetery. Christ gave His perfect life in exchange for our sinful lives. He offered to switch places with us and take the penalty of breaking God’s law that brings life. He took death so that we could be forever young. This free gift of kindness and grace is extended to anyone who will humble themselves, confess their sinful choices, and believe in Jesus.

The Bible explains it like this: “Christ … loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:25-27).

No matter how many gray hairs I get, when I choose Christ I am forever young. I am promised eternal life. I am assured of a new body, without spots, wrinkles, or blemishes. There is a fountain of life. It is Jesus Christ. Drink deeply of the promises of Scripture and you will be forever young.
