Rock Star!

I don't like to be negative, so let me just say that this summer was not the best one of my life. Not unless you consider nausea, excruciating pain, surgery, more pain and nausea, and another surgery a good time. I had passed kidney stones before, but this time the pain and nausea lingered for days and then turned into weeks. Finally, I went to a urologist, who discovered I had a stubborn stone stuck about halfway through its journey and it wasn't budging. I would have to have surgery.

So, okay, surgery. Two stones were “blasted” and a second surgery took care of another one. I thought that would be the end of it, but when the anesthesia wore off, my husband said the doctor had told him there were more stones in the kidneys.

Talk about discouraging! I thought about all I'd been through, particularly the just-let-me-die episodes of pain. “This is not a bright future,” I wailed. There's got to be a way to prevent this.”

The doctor provided me with a list of foods that contain oxalate. Oxalate is an organic molecule found in many vegetables, fruits and nuts. Unfortunately, oxalate is responsible for forming kidney stones. High on the list of foods to avoid were things like whole grains, nuts, fruits, chocolate, and soda. This was not good news for a vegetarian! Come to think of it, this would not be good news for anyone trying to maintain a high fiber diet.


Discouraged, I went to the Internet, but the lists all appeared similar. One of them even recommended eating a low-fiber diet and sticking to more refined foods! Now, chocolate and soda I could give up (and I have), but I didn't want to trade kidney stones for a risk of colon cancer and  heart disease.

I kept searching and found natural approaches, which did say that a low fiber diet was not a good trade. Very high oxalate foods were mentioned such as peanut butter and rhubarb, which should be avoided. Okay. I could do that. They also listed supplements that would help to  reduce kidney stone formation. Calcium, magnesium, and vitamins B, D, and K. 

Great, I was finding encouragement. But the most encouraging thing of all, which was something that all of the experts agreed upon was the necessity of drinking large amounts of water. Kidney stones form in urine that is too acidic. If enough water is flushing through, the crystals will not form as readily. The bottom line? Concentrated urine yields stones.

So, I started measuring out my water to make sure I was drinking at least ten cups a day. And what happened was amazing! I began passing the stones...WITHOUT PAIN! There can really be no explanation other than the huge increase in water. Once again, Dr. Water comes to the rescue in healing illness. And defeating kidney stones is only one area where the doctor has proven success. Water proved to be my "rock" star!
