Author and speaker Max Lucado, shares a story that Dr. Maxwell Maltz1 shared with him in his book You Changed My Life: Stories of Real People with Remarkable Hearts. The story is about a man’s unsuccessful attempt to save his parents from a burning house. He received an injury from the fire which disfigured his face.

Gravely disappointed, he interpreted his loss and malady as punishment from God, shut himself up and refused to allow anyone, including his wife, to see him.

Distraught and heartbroken, his wife sought help from Dr. Maltz, a respected and capable surgeon. The doctor comforted her, “I can restore his face” he said.

Sure the doctor meant well, but still unconvinced she explained that her husband had refused any and all help up to that point, and she was confident he would again refuse.

“Then why are you here…why the visit?” asked Dr. Maltz.

“I want you to disfigure my face so I can be like him! If I can share in his pain, then maybe he will let me back into his life.”

Apalled and Shocked

Appalled and shocked, Dr. Maltz denied her appeal. So stirred by her love-motivated request, he now had to go speak with her husband. Knocking on the man’s bedroom door, he announced, “I’m a plastic surgeon, and I want you to know that I can restore your face.”

No response or acknowledgement followed.

“Please come out,” called Dr. Maltz.

Again no answer.

Leaning against the door, Dr. Maltz appealed to the husband, telling him of his wife’s visit to his office and her inquiry. “She wants me to disfigure her face,” he said, “to make her face like yours in the hope that you will let her back into your life. That’s how much she loves you.”

The air was silent punctuated with a slight pause. Ready to leave, Dr. Maltz heard a slight noise and watched the door knob turn ever so slowly.

Devastated by Adam’s choice to sin, Christ came to this world to, if you will, tell Satan to “disfigure His face” so that he could share in our pain. Jesus loves me, He loves you so much, that he came and endured all the misery, all the disappointments, all the insults, the heart-ache, and yes pain, in order to show us and let us know He wants us to open our doors and let Him in.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

My friends, Azure Fields, sing:

“Just open up the door to your hearts,
He’ll free you from the pain trapped inside;
Just open up the door to your hearts,
He’ll dry those many tears you have cried...”2
