Frequent Flyer

Flying has always fascinated me. As a teenager I took flying lessons, and today, were it not for my wife’s concern, I’d most likely be a pilot. I used to dream of doing spins, performing fly-overs of friends and relatives homes, flying upside down, and taking my wife and kids up above the clouds.

That’s why Chicago businessman, Thomas Stuker, is just my kind of person. Although he is not a pilot and used to be afraid of flying, he’s spent the past 29 years of his life flying commercially. It’s been estimated that he’s flown around the world roughly 400 times and accumulated 10 million air miles.

Six thousand of those trips were flown aboard United Airlines, and in 2010, “The CEO of United Airlines, Jeff Smisek, was waiting when Thomas Stuker stepped off his flight from Chicago to Los Angeles on Saturday to congratulate him on flying his 10 millionth mile with the airline, award him with a permanent upgrade, and tell him a plane would be named in his honor.”1 Stuker can now fly anywhere he wants several times a year for free.

Wings Like Eagles

But Stuker has a limit…his miles only allow him to stay on this planet. Although family life may prevent me from attaining my pilot’s license, I dream of the day when I become a frequent flyer. I will fly to other planets on my own without having to sit in an airplane. Isaiah 40:31 tells me, “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (ESV).

Perhaps it’s our silly wild imaginations, but my kids and I dream of flying to the top of the biggest mountain in the universe and without stopping, changing our shoes into skis with a thought. Once over the mountain and without limitations, we hit the snow at just the right angle skiing to the bottom as fast as we can. But we don’t stop there; we fly to the biggest lake and repeat, this time on water skis.

The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him,” (1 Corinthians 2:9, NIV). My kids are always telling me the fun crazy things they’ll do in heaven, and sometimes I find myself dreaming along with them. What’s even more fascinating is that Isaiah 65:17 tells us that we won’t even want to remember or think about this world or all of its limitations and woes.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for my wings. I think I’ll be doing more than just sitting around and playing a harp.
