Star Hunters

Recently a meteorite the size of a mini-van burst into pieces over the small Sierra foothill villages of Lotus and Coloma, Calif. Being that this is only a few miles from where I live, I had to investigate. I drove to a large park near the American River, with a head full of wonder, feeling like Indiana Jones on one of his crusades. As I rounded the bend to the park, I realized I wasn't the only treasure seeker looking for the precious fallen star. There were groups of star hunters, with their metal detectors and special locator machines. I even saw a couple of guys on their hands and knees with large sticks, combing the grass for star rocks. I got out of the car only for a minute, as the park charged a fee which I did not wish to pay, and wildly scanned the ground for a piece of star, but alas found nothing and drove home minus the Indiana Jones feeling.

Jaws Dropped

The newspaper interviewed a woman who just happened upon a star rock while walking her dog by the river, it was quite large, and she had no idea what it was. She gathered it up in a handkerchief and was headed back to her car when she spotted a group of men rousing through the bushes with their metal detectors. She approached them and kindly asked for their assistance in explaining the odd rock she'd found. Needless to say, the star hunters jaws collectively dropped to the ground when they saw what she had under that handkerchief—a real star rock! Of course, she was told to keep it somewhere safe, or prodded maybe into selling it; even NASA wanted a chance to study that rock. I'm not sure where that rock ended up, but I'm sure somebody out there is studying it right now.

Events like this falling meteor remind me of the vast wonders in the universe that God has created. From distant planets to a sea of stars, the heavens truly are magnificent, and I look forward to one day exploring them with the greatest tour guide of all, God!

“Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven” (Genesis 1:7-8).
