The Strongest Drink

“What’s the strongest drink in the world?” a friend of mine asked his neighbor one day. My friend’s neighbor was trying to break an addiction to caffeine, so he was familiar with many strong coffee drinks!

He replied, “I don’t know. What’s the strongest drink in the world?”

My friend shot back, “Water. It is so strong, it can hold up the ship The Queen Mary which weighs 81,237 tons!” His neighbor burst out laughing. Then my friend leaned forward and said, “And it can hold you up more than you think.”

Water is one of the most amazing substances on our planet. It sets Earth uniquely apart from other worlds in our solar system. About 71% of the Earth’s surface is made up of water. If all the water in the world was poured into the United States it would create a lake 90 miles deep. [1] Only three percent of this water is drinkable (not salt water).

You need water to live. About 55-78% of your body is made of water. The average person needs about 7-8 glasses of water a day to stay well hydrated—more if you are exercising or if it is very hot outside or if you live in higher altitudes. Water aids in digestion, in maintaining the circulatory system, in lubricating joints, in assisting respiration, in maintaining body temperature, and even in thinking clearly. It is a basic building block for every cell in your body.

Bathing Daily

Water is not just needed inside your body. Bathing daily helps maintain your health as well. Washing your skin removes impurities and gives health to your organs by invigorating the circulatory system. Ending a shower with a cool spray of water strengthens your immune system.

Hydrotherapy is the use of water therapeutically. Migraine headaches can sometimes be treated by putting both of your feet in a hot foot bath and placing a cold towel on your forehead. This draws blood away from the brain (the source of your congestion) to your feet and so relieving the headache.

Unfortunately, not all water is drinkable (potable). About 1 billion people do not have safe drinking water. Impure water with harmful contaminants kills about 5 million people a year. Polluted water is the cause for at least 1.4 million children who die from diarrhea. [2]

As for my neighbor’s friend trying to break a caffeine addiction, there are many drinks that are actually “stealing” water from your body (diuretics). Coffee, tea, or sodas with caffeine are culprits. Eliminate them and drink pure water instead. It will cleanse your body and give you lasting energy.

Water is life. Perhaps that is why Jesus told the woman at the well, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13, 14 NIV).
