God's Right Hand

Which is your dominant hand? I’m right-handed. But an injury as a teen-ager has given me a weak grip in my best hand. It’s a disadvantage when playing racquetball. But, I am still among the majority of people in the world when it comes to hand dominance. Different studies show that 70-90% of everyone on our planet is right-handed.

Wiki says, “Right-handedness is the form of handedness in which one has greater coordination and dexterity in the right hand than in the left hand. Right-handed individuals will perform everyday tasks such as writing, cooking, and carrying out one's personal hygiene with the right hand.”1

There are no conclusive studies on why there are more right-handed people than left-handed. It’s probably found in the dominance of one side of the brain over the other. Not everyone that is right-handed is always right-footed. And there appears to be a small connection with ocular dominance (a preference for using one eye over the other).

Our society tends to favor right-handed people when it comes to gadgets and tools. Most golf clubs, scissors, cameras, computer mice, guitars, guns, and even padded oven mitts (if padded on one side) favor right-handed people. Even writing in English (from left to right) is easier for right-handed people. And many cultures in the world use the right hand to demonstrate respect when shaking hands, giving a gift, or making a vow.

Left-handed Inferior?

Lest you think left-handed people might be inferior, of the seven most recent presidents, four of them (including Barak Obama) are left-handed. And there are some studies that seem to show left-handers are high achievers. The Bible warns, “And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away” (Matthew 5:30).

The Bible talks about the right hand over 100 times. It can show favor (Genesis 48:13-19). It indicates wisdom (Ecclesiastes 10:2). It points to a place of honor (Psalm 45:9). And it shows power and strength (Psalm 60:5). A favorite Bible verse of many is found in Isaiah 41:10. It says, “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Is God right-handed? Can we limit the Mighty Creator to a hand-dominance when the Lord does not even need to lift a finger to create the world? (Perhaps God is ambidextrous!) The Lord does not have greater coordination or dexterity with either hand. But the Bible imagery of the right-hand is clearly used to show us a powerful characteristic of God. Our Maker’s “righteous right hand” teaches us that the best, most favored and powerful help we can receive comes from Someone we can trust.

“Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy” (Exodus 15:6). “In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds” (Psalm 45:4). Did you ever stop to think where our strength comes from? Mark 16:19 concludes Christ’s work on earth with these words, “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.”

Are you left-handed or right-handed? It doesn’t matter when it comes to being upheld by God. You can trust yourself in the grip of One who will never drop you.
