If You Really Knew Me

"O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me" (Psalm 139:1).

A few weeks ago a new show debuted on one of the popular television stations called If You Really Knew Me. I remember seeing the concept before on a talk show some years ago, but seeing it again after it had been more substantially developed was an interesting experience. The premise—a group of teenagers sit in a circle to reveal who they truly are as opposed to what their peers believe them to be. The conclusion—the relief of “coming clean” yet having love and support rather than judgment and condemnation from their peers - changes their lives forever.

God Knows You

As I watched the program, I couldn't help but think how God knows us —truly knows us, and still each day His mercies to us are new. We cannot pretend with Him. It’s impossible. God knows us better than we know ourselves. His love for us exceeds any human love we've ever experienced—that alone releases us from numerous anchors we carry around our necks most of our lives. Following the If You Really Knew Me format, God's mercy and loving-kindness towards us should change our lives in a moment. And it does – if you choose to believe and accept it. Yet many of us remain unconvinced and doubtful that God really knows and loves us despite the fact that the Bible clearly tells us so.

Psalm 139:13 says, He knit us together in our mother’s womb. Matthew 10:30 states that He knows the number of hairs on our heads. He even knows what we are going to say—before we say it! (Psalm 139:4).  God knows every single disgusting thing about us, and He continues to love us, and calls us His own. We are on the receiving end of this grace, mercy and support every moment of our day if only we will turn to Him.

One of the exercises, that the TV show participants were encouraged to do, was to make the sign of “I Love You” in American Sign Language when they wished to show their support to a peer. Now imagine Jesus our Savior standing across from you holding the I love you sign up with his nail scarred hands. That sign of support is for you. God both really knows you, and really loves you.

Imagine the true life changing possibilities when the Creator of the universe says—"I really know you and I love you, for who you are. There is nothing you can say or do that will make me love you any more or any less. Won't you let me love you?"
