Give Up, Never!

One of my boyhood school chums grew up to be a super salesman. The reason: he never gave up.

One day he was going door-to-door with one of his trainees, teaching him to sell vacuum cleaners. At one door they were greeted rudely by a woman who quickly slammed her door. My friend, Howard, said to his amazed trainee, “We need to go around to the back door!” When the same woman opened the back door, Howard smiled at her and exclaimed, “I surely hope you’re not as mean as that woman who came to the front door!” Somewhat amused, she shook her head, and said, “Well, come on in!" The two men entered, and, after a visiting with the woman for a while, sold her a vacuum cleaner. As they headed back to their car, Howard turned to his soon-to-be salesman and said, “You see, it’s easy!”

Perseverance and persistence pay off in business. They are even more important in prayer. We must persevere in our prayers. Not that God is indifferent to our requests and needs to be persuaded to answer us. It’s just that our persistence shows that we mean business with God. It shows whether or not we believe what He tells us. The Bible says, “It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that there is a God and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).

Let Go Too Soon

In their prayer requests to God, many let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. We need to keep our wants and our needs, as well as our sorrows continually before Him. You can’t weary Him.  It’s His plan to answer your prayers in ways He wouldn’t do if you didn’t ask Him.

God’s promises won’t fail if we keep holding on to them in faith. His promise is, “We can be confident that He will listen to us whenever we ask Him for anything in line with His will. And if we know He is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that He will give us what we ask for.” (1 John 5:14, 15). Keep on praying. And never give up!
