Spiritual Birdseed

Every morning while eating breakfast I watch the birds as they gather around the little wooden feeder in my backyard, jockeying for position and a chance at a life sustaining meal.

Birds are constantly foraging for food, looking high and low, and competing with many other species for the same meal. As long as the bird feeder is full of seed, the birds will be there in abundance to enjoy it, but if I forget to fill it for a few days, the birds will slowly fade away, until there is nothing left but my old wooden bird feeder.

Search and Accept

I thought to myself, aren't we fortunate that God never forgets to fill His bird feeder. It's always full with the spiritual birdseed that we need to sustain ourselves in this ever changing world; but we have to, just like the birds, constantly and diligently search and accept the birdseed that God provides. The Bible says, “your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105) and “how sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (vs 103).

It's easy to let the days go by, telling ourselves that tomorrow we'll read the Bible or that later tonight we'll say a prayer. Too soon we find ourselves in a spiritual void and we start clamoring for the birdseed that only God can provide.

So today, why not start anew by making it your first priority to eat the spiritual birdseed from God's feeder. It will set in motion good-forming habits that will lead to greater spiritual understanding and a closer walk with God. The best part is that it's free, and unlike the birds you don't have to compete for God's affection.
