Our Big Brother

Little boys are different from little girls. They sometimes enjoy a good tussle. They just like to rough and tumble.

When I was a small boy, I liked to wrestle with other small boys. As long as they weren’t bigger, older and stronger than I was. I didn’t like losing a fight. So I always tried to size up and pick the boys I wanted to wrestle with.

One day on the playground at a new school, I saw this little guy, and offered to wrestle with him. “Naw,” he said. “I don’t want to.” “Come on,” I urged, giving him a shove. He would need some persuading, I thought. But he was smart enough to know he was a little smaller and younger than I was. He just didn’t want to fight. But I went after him anyway. He protested, and even cried a little. So I gave up on him. Not much fun wrestling with a guy who wouldn’t wrestle.

She Wasn't Smiling

Next day, a big girl approached me on the playground. I mean, she was at least twice my size. And several years older. As I looked up at her, I saw she wasn’t smiling. She asked me if I had picked on her little brother. Somehow I could not tell a lie. Then she let me know that if I ever laid a hand on him again, I would wish I hadn’t. I really believed her. And as long as I went to that school, I stayed clear of that little guy.

In later years, that boy and I became friends, and fellow pastors. We enjoy telling others about our big brother, who has promised to take care of us, and protect us from our enemy, the Devil, who’s always trying to beat up on us. The Bible says, “…there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24 NKJV). That Friend is Jesus, and He’s always ready to help us.

So, “…let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong…so you can defend yourself against the Devil’s tricks…And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm” (Ephesians 6:10-13, CEV).

With your big Brother on your side, you just can’t lose!
