In Over My Head

It was a beautiful, sunny, summer day. A perfect day for the beach. I, along with a couple of my high school buddies, decided to head for New Smyrna Beach on Florida’s East Coast. The Atlantic was not nearly as calm for swimming as the Gulf. But that was several hours away, and the ocean was nearby.

We arrived, parked our car on the beach, and raced to plunge into the cooling surf. The waves were really high, and I was instantly drawn out and under. We were unaware of the undertow, which was particularly bad that day. In fact, the pull was so strong, one could hardly stand, even in knee-deep water.

I struggled and fought hard to regain my footing, but was totally at the mercy of the surf. I could not see or feel the ocean floor. In my panic, I thought of family and friends. Then I thought of the only One who could help me now. I cried out to God to save me.

Undertow Subsided

Then, suddenly, the pull of the water subsided, and I felt the sandy bottom beneath my feet. I looked up and saw our car far down the beach. My two buddies were swimming at a distance. The undertow had carried me a long way. For another hour or more, we enjoyed the shallow surf. I arrived home that night with nothing more than a painful sunburn, to remind me of my near brush with death. Later, I learned of numerous drownings on that same stretch of beach.

In all my seventeen years, I had never come closer to death, than on that day. I realized God had spared me for a purpose. The Bible says, “When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—Because I am God, your personal God” (Isaiah 43:2).

Surely God made good on His promise that day at the beach. And what He’s done for others, He’ll do for you!
