To Be Loved

The other day, my son said, “Mommy, thank you for loving me.”

Being very observant and inquisitive he asked me what love meant. I told him that love is when you care about someone and you have feelings for someone. He then proceeded to tell me, “Mom, I have feelings for you. I have feelings for you when you are happy and sad. I love you so much, Mom.” My heart was full of joy as I watched my son struggling to find the right words so that he could formulate his thoughts and feelings for me, right before my eyes.

The love that we show to our children is so important, because not only does it let them know they are loved, but also helps them to learn how to show that love to others. Children tend to love without end. You can see the love in a child’s eyes. They are some of the best examples of loving as God wants us to love.

This is how God loves us. He has feelings for us. James Bryan Smith says, “I have come to believe that God is madly in love with us. God loves us with a passionate love. It is too great for us to comprehend; we do not have the words to describe it fully. It is too vast to grasp completely. But we can know it. And we can feel it.”1

The lyrics from Christian artist Toby Mac, really speak to this love that God has for us:

Made to Love

“That I was made to love You
I was made to find You
I was made just for You
Made to adore You
I was made to love and be loved by You
You were here before me
You were waiting on me
And You said You’d keep me
Never would you leave me
I was made to love
And be loved by You.”

May we find and experience God’s great love for us. May we share that with others.
