Panic Button

We acquired a new security feature for our office secretary at the place I worked a few years ago. It was a panic button. The little round plastic button on a keychain, when pressed, would alert the police to make a visit to our place of business. One of the nice features of this safety device was that it was silent. When you pressed the button, it made no noise. It simply sent a signal to the security system and notified law enforcement that there was a problem.

One day soon after we received the panic button, my 16-year-old son was sitting around in the front office waiting for me to wrap up some business. He noticed the panic button and wondered what it was. Without knowing how it worked, he casually pressed the button. When nothing apparently happened he set it down. About 15 minutes later the police showed up. A group of people were meeting in another room and the officers questioned if everything was okay. They were confused and didn’t know what had happened. Only later did we piece together the story. My son was not only embarrassed, but paid out of his own pocket for the “false alarm” fine.

The Lord Will Respond

God has a panic button. No matter where we are, no matter what circumstances we are under, we can silently press this button and the Lord will respond. That emergency call is prayer. The Bible says, “In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me” (Psalm 86:7).

Your call may seem like you’ve pressed a silent button. You may wonder if God hears you. You may not see an immediate response. But you can trust the Word of God. Many stories in Scripture show the response of a caring Lord to people in need. Jonah called from the belly of a whale. The disciple Peter called while sinking in stormy waves. David called when facing Goliath.

Are you in a panic? Are you facing a fearful situation that seems to want to swallow you alive? Do you have a giant problem ready to crush you? Call to God in prayer. Press this heavenly panic button. The Lord is there. Wait patiently, God will respond. And you won’t have to pay a fine.
