A Prudent Wife

"Houses and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord" (Proverbs 19:14).

I like the way the New Century Version of the Bible puts this verse:  “Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a wise wife is a gift from the Lord.”

Did you notice it doesn’t say that houses and riches are from God? How many times are we led to believe that having a house and being rich are God’s gifts? The Bible expressly says that God does not gift a man with these material things.

It says a prudent wife is God's gift to a man. That’s right; a wise woman cannot be picked up on the store shelf.   She cannot be shown by a real estate agent, nor wheeled out onto a showroom floor. A prudent wife cannot be bought. Such a woman is a gift from God.

These days, it is not popular to be prudent. Most of the things that this society teaches have nothing to do with prudence, and more to do with being shallow, worshiping physical beauty, and instant gratification. To be prudent is actually seen as a bad thing in some circles. It has even been hurled as an insult!  Have you ever heard someone called a prude? That word usually isn’t used as an expression of admiration.

The definition of prudent is: wise in handling practical matters; exercising good judgment or common sense.

So why would being prudent be laughed at and ridiculed, shunned and even hidden away? I believe that the men who would object to having a prudent wife, are far outnumbered by those who would welcome her with open arms.

If you are a husband or future husband, don’t ever pass up the opportunity to treat your wife as the gift from God that she is. And those of you who are wives or are planning to be, don’t ever let someone downplay or degrade your very important role. You are a gift to your husband from the God who created the entire universe. Never feel worldly pressure to behave as anything other than the gift that you are.
