“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Sharon loved to give to her church, but being retired she didn’t have much. She wondered how she could increase her giving when her income was limited and didn’t increase. Then she got an idea. She prayed about it and made a pact with God. Any money she found on the ground during the coming year she’d give to the church.
Her adventure started. There was a penny here and a dime there. Almost every day she found something. She put it all in an old shoebox in her closet. As the days passed more and more went into the box. By the end of that first year she had nearly $25 dollars. She was excited to turn it over to her church for an added Christmas gift.
But, Sharon wanted to do more. She stood up in front of the church and challenged all to find money the coming year as she had. Others joined in.
Delighted to Give
One family with three small children took the challenge. Anything they would find that year would be “Road Score” for Jesus. The kids caught the vision and got excited anytime they found some money. At the end of that year they had about $25 to give. All three children got up in front of the church as they gave their Christmas gift to God. They had so much fun that year that they decided to find $50 the next year.
Sharon had found almost $50 by that December, but she wanted to give more. She told God that her $50 wasn’t enough. She asked if He would help her find more for the church. That day she took a walk down by a shopping area near her home. As she was walking she noticed a bill of some kind in the weeds along the highway. She went to pick it up and discovered that it was a $100 bill. She couldn’t believe it! God had answered her prayer so quickly and so over abundantly! She could hardly wait to call her pastor. She shared her answered prayer and asked him to come get the $150 she had to give to the church.
Paul was talking about people like Sharon when he said: “God loves a cheerful giver.” Her enthusiasm has brought added funds into the church and inspired many others to join with her each year in finding “Road Score” for Jesus. There is no limit what a “cheerful giver” and God can do together!
