What Do You Say?

As I sit here, I am reminded of a story that one of my students told me many years ago. As he walked down a busy street in Bronx, New York, he witnessed a car accident. While not serious enough to summon ambulances the cars were not in good shape. He said that the female driver was particularly distraught. She did not know how she was going to pay for the damage that had been caused and she said as much. The other driver was not interested in hearing her sob story and began to argue with her.

Just then an obviously homeless man happened upon the situation. He wandered to the section of the street in which the drivers were arguing and said to the woman, “How much money do you need?”  Repulsed, she told him to go away. The man persisted in his questioning, “How much money do you need? You are my daughter, I want to help you.” Shocked this time, she again told the man to get away. As if to prove himself the man started taking dollar after dollar from his person, offering the dirty and crumpled, but very real bills to her, he began to say over and over again, “I am your father, please let me help you. Why won’t you let me help you? I am your father…”

Pleading to Help Us

When life becomes trying and you get into a bind, when you find that you have come to a point where you would probably do just about anything for some help--there God is, willing to help all of us, His children in need. There He is just pleading to help us:  "I am the Lord your God. I am holding your hand, so don't be afraid. I am here to help you" (Isaiah 41:13).

What would you say? Actually, what do you say?
