Counterfeit or Genuine

My wife and I were conducting a seminar in a large metropolitan area. While there, we became acquainted with an enthusiastic youth leader. She was raising money for her youth club’s many activities. She had her kids busy collecting items to take to a large area flea market.

At the end of the day’s sale, the leader and all the young people were excited over the sale’s success. That is, until they got to the bank with their deposit. At the teller’s window, the youth leader was surprised when the teller shoved a rather large bill back to her. “I can’t accept this one,” the teller said. “It’s counterfeit.” Someone had cut a deal at the flea market. And it wasn’t the youth club.

A counterfeit is always a disappointment to those who are expecting the real thing. A counterfeit is a cheap imitation. It’s made with the intent to deceive. It’s always marked by false pretense.

People Get Hurt

Now, passing counterfeit money is a crime, causing inconvenience, loss and disappointment to the victim. But counterfeit religion is even worse. It’s deceptive, because it looks so much like the real thing. But sooner or later, it will catch up with the person who tries to pass it off as genuine religion. And when that happens, people get hurt; especially the people who know genuine religion. They often get turned off on all religion, and want nothing more to do with it. This is sad.

But what a difference genuine religion makes! Especially to the people who would rather see a sermon than hear one. This is why Jesus tells us, “…Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

And you can take that to the bank!
