The Truth of Star Wars

You may remember the movie Star Wars. This science-fiction movie by 20th Century Fox was one of the greatest ever on Broadway, and one of the top money-making films of all time. It told how Darth Vader, a bright, young knight, turned from his career as guardian of truth and justice, to establish his evil Galactic Empire. From his headquarters on Death Star, he planned to destroy all good in the universe. The forces for good managed to steal and destroy the plans for Vader’s space station. Then peace once more returned to the universe, as good triumphed over evil.

Incredibly, something like this really happened here on Planet Earth, in our own Milky Way Galaxy. The Scriptures tell us that God created this earth and its first occupants, Adam and Eve, perfect and beautiful. (Genesis 1 and 2). God gave them free choice either to obey or disobey His commandments. They chose to disobey, causing sin and death. Some people blame this on God. But it was the work of an enemy. Who was this enemy?

The Scriptures say: “Whoever continues to sin belongs to the Devil, because the Devil has sinned from the very beginning” (1 John 3:8, TEV). The Devil was the one who tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God.

He Made a Devil of Himself

Why did God create the Devil? He didn’t. God created Lucifer, a beautiful, perfect angel. Notice Ezekiel 28:15, TEV: “Your conduct was perfect from the day you were created until you began to do evil.” Lucifer became proud of his high position and his beauty, and rebelled against God. He made a devil of himself.

God put up with Lucifer for a long time, until finally, God had to expel him and his angel sympathizers from heaven.  Then Lucifer, now known as the Devil and Satan, set up his headquarters on this earth, from which he planned to spread his rebellion to the entire universe. His deception of Adam and Eve was just his first step.

Why doesn’t God put an end to the Devil and sin, with all its terrible results? That’s exactly what He plans to do. But He must do this by universal consent. Lasting love and loyalty to God can never be forced. There is now a real war going on in this world between good and evil. It is a battle for the loyalties of every person on earth. And, since love is the only weapon a loving God can use in waging this warfare against evil, victory takes a long time. When sin and evil have run their course, and all have made their choices, the Scriptures say that God will destroy Satan and his followers (Matthew 25:41). Then God will recreate this earth in all its original beauty and perfection. He says, “Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth—so wonderful that no one will even think about the old ones anymore” (Isaiah 65:17, NLT). Those who are faithful to Him will live there forever.

That's where I want to be. How about you?
