Never Give Up!

My husband likes to get funny video clips from friends and has found a few really funny ones of his own. Our family has had a great time laughing at the hilarious antics portrayed. A few weeks ago he shared another clip with us. This time, not a funny one, but of a man on a talent show in England called Britain’s "Got Talent."

As I watched, I was more inspired than I have been in a long time. The clip begins with a man coming onstage to sing, being asked by the judges what he plans to do for them that evening. His unassuming response, “I’m going to sing opera.” As the judge all but rolls his eyes, the man prepares to sing.

His suit is what most of us would probably call tacky. He has a cracked tooth that is all too obvious. He certainly doesn’t look like you’d expect a potential opera singer to look. Then he starts to sing.

I have never been a big fan of opera, but I have to say I was almost moved to tears. The emotion and beauty that came through as he sang was truly amazing. In the clip, you see the judges sit back and start paying attention, the audience erupting in enthusiastic applause. It is truly amazing and totally unexpected.

Ready to Give Up Dream
I have since learned a little more of this man’s story. His name is Paul Potts. Bullied as a child, feeling insignificant and lacking confidence, singing became his passion. His goal was to sing opera. Illness and financial reverses in recent years left him heavily in debt and caused him to almost give up his dream of pursuing a career in music. Entering the contest was his last attempt at chasing his dream. He was so broke that he had to borrow the money to purchase the suit he wore on the show.

Then that magical night, everything changed. He went on to win the contest, winning enough money to pay off the debts that had left him struggling to make ends meet. He has since released a CD and I am guessing that we will hear much more of Paul Potts in the future.

We all have hopes and dreams. As we look forward to the beginning of a New Year, we begin to think about all the things we hope to accomplish or improve in our lives. Maybe we want to exercise more, improve our marriage, develop a more consistent devotional life, eliminate our debts, fulfill a dream. Our resolutions may be different, but we all long for success. Maybe it seems hopeless because we’ve made the same resolutions before only to become discouraged as years go by and we seem no closer to the victories we long for or the accomplishments we dream of.

I am reminded of my favorite Bible verse that keeps me going when my spiritual journey seems stalled. “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”  (Philippians 1:6).

It’s an awesome thing to have a God who never gives up on us! So take courage, make those resolutions and even when you feel like a failure and success seems illusive, know that all heaven is cheering you on. . . and never give up!
