Endless Extravaganza

I recently attended the annual Chicagoland Flower and Garden Show, held this year for the first time in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Having never been to such an event, I was totally unprepared for the barrage of sights and smells that accosted my senses when I walked through the doors.

Stopping dead in my tracks, I stood and stared in amazement. Mature evergreen trees rose toward the ceiling as they shaded brick patios and beautiful gazebos. Graceful stone walkways were lavishly lined with delicate flowers in a stunning array of colors and shapes. Earthy aromas from the woodchips and soil mingled with the fragrance of hyacinths and daffodils, while the soothing sound of splashing fountains and waterfalls spilled over the entire scene. (There were even fish in the ponds!)

As my friend and I recovered ourselves and began to stroll along the paths we noticed hands-on seminars being conducted off to the sides, as well as informational classes. The demonstrations about cooking with fresh herbs seemed very popular! And in all the areas “experts” were standing by to answer any question one might have.

Tantalize Every Sensory Avenue

The creative displays of outdoor dining arrangements were truly magnificent. I have never before seen, or even imagined, the fabulous creations of living “yard art” designed to tantalize every sensory avenue.

What an incredible amount of planning, time, energy and money had been poured into this ten day extravaganza. Exhibitors had invested big time bucks in something that, on the scale of cosmic time, would be only a fleeting moment, only a pleasant memory.

As I reflect on this event I find myself wondering: How much am I investing in preparing for a much bigger event – living in eternity? What kinds of preparations am I making in my thinking, in my character development and in my every day actions? Am I putting my money where it matters? Am I directing my energy toward things that really count in relation to eternity? Will I be ready for the endless extravaganza?

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Corinthians 2:9).
