Here are some natural, good-sense ways to keep your ticker tickin’ without the use of potentially dangerous prescriptions:

  • Lose weight if you’re overweight or obese, and then maintain a healthy weight.

  • Exercise on most, if not all, days of the week for at least 30 minutes.

  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Keep sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams a day or lower.

  • Consume at least 25 grams of soluble fiber a day.

  • Ask your doctor about supplements to help lower slightly elevated cholesterol.

  • Learn stress reduction techniques, and let yourself laugh more.
