Youth is NOT wasted on the young. A new study finds that even octogenarians can enjoy improved health and fitness with regular exercise. The study, appearing in the Journal of Aging and Health, included 64 independent-living residents (average age 83.5) who were all sedentary at the start. Participants were assigned to one of three groups: resistance training, walking, or no exercise at all. Those in the two exercise groups worked out twice a week. At the end of the 16 weeks, the members of the walking and resistance groups boasted significantly improved strength, flexibility, agility, and balance.
