One Thing Is Needed

Martha was a great hostess and a good cook. Her friend, Jesus, was coming to dinner, and she wanted everything to be just right. When Jesus arrived, there was still a lot to be done. After welcoming Jesus, Martha went back into the kitchen, but Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. She didn’t want to miss a word He said. Jesus had a long talk with Mary that day. She really needed that at this time in her life.

While the cook pots boiled in the kitchen, Martha boiled. Finally, she boiled over. Rushing in and interrupting Jesus’ conversation with Mary, Martha cried, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell her to help me. And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her’” (Luke 10:40-42).

There are a lot of things demanding our time and attention. Our work, getting an education, and family responsibilities take up most of our waking hours. Then, of course, we need to know what’s going on in the world. After all, human knowledge doubles every few years, and we don’t want to be left behind. Also, new gadgets are flooding the market place. And the Internet has millions of web sites just begging to be explored. We can get stressed out just trying to keep up with everything.

Hold on a second! I think I hear someone calling me. Hey, can somebody turn down that TV! Sounds like someone’s calling my name. Who is it? “You are worried and troubled about many things...one thing is needed.” What’s that? “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).
