If It Offends You

I still remember the first time I met Kurt. He had come to our youth group. He made a big impact. With one mechanical hand and an eye missing it was hard not to stare. The youth didn’t quite know what to do with Kurt, so they kept their distance. But, Kurt kept coming.

I gave him a ride home one day and he told me his story.

Kurt had grown up in a Christian home. He had been taught about God at an early age. He knew the Scriptures, but somewhere along the way Kurt got into drugs. It was innocent curiosity at first, but soon it controlled Kurt’s life. He had a problem.

The guilt from using drugs consumed him. He knew that God didn’t want him to use drugs, so since he was using he wondered if God still loved him. The guilt drove him away from God. Satan’s plan was working.

Then one fateful night when Kurt was high Satan reminded him about a verse in the Bible. It rang in his head.

“If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell” (Matthew 18:8-9).

Misguided Application

So, Kurt did just that. He cut off his hand and gorged out his eye.

But it didn’t bring him peace. Oh, he did stop using drugs. And, he eventually rediscovered a loving God. But what a price to pay!

Did God really want Kurt to hurt himself? Was God serious about “sinners” becoming disabled?

Not literally!

God takes sin seriously and invites us to separate ourselves from anything that leads to sin. He loves us too much to allow us to keep sinning without warning!

In a way, God wants us to become disabled--sin disabled! This happens when we spend time with Him and His Word.
