Deliverance From Evil

"For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12).

All my life I have known that there is a battle going on between good and evil. I have always known that Satan is trying to destroy us, while God is trying to save us, but I had never really understood it on a personal level until I went through the following experience.

I had been struggling with depression for many months. I had sought medical help but the medications gave me side effects that seemed worse than the disease so I stopped taking them.

One day, I was alone in my home, trying to get some work done in my office. I sat at my desk trying to concentrate, but my depression was so intense that I could not function. I fought the mood for several hours, and finally gave up and went into the living room where I sat down in a comfortable chair to think and pray. As I prayed and meditated, the thought came to me that the oppression that I was fighting was not made of flesh and blood. It occurred to me that I was being harassed by evil spirits. Right then and there, I bowed my head and prayed.

I Prayed a Simple Prayer

I prayed a simple prayer out loud. I simply asked God to remove Satan and his evil spirits from my life. I confessed my powerlessness and recognizing His omnipotence asked Him to remove the evil spirits and to bind them in the name of Jesus who had spilled His blood on the cross for me.

After praying, I leaned back, closed my eyes and waited for my miracle. Nothing happened. I sat there, feeling just as depressed as before. After a couple of minutes, I began to get very sleepy. I knew I needed to get up and work at my desk. I had deadlines to meet. But it was impossible to stay awake. I went to the bedroom, laid down and fell fast asleep immediately.

Having slept for about an hour, I was suddenly awakened by the sound of the front door opening. This was very unusual because my husband was working and my sons were at school. No one else had a key to our house. I quickly got up to see who had opened the door. There was no one there. The door was wide open, but there was no one in sight. How had the door opened? I stood there, baffled, trying to figure out what had happened. The door could not have opened by itself. This was the monsoon season and the hot, muggy weather made the door stick. Sometimes we had to use physical force to open it. But there it was–wide open, and nobody in sight.

As I stood there contemplating the situation, I became aware of something that was different about me. I was no longer depressed. In fact, I felt great! I wanted to live again, and I felt a new inner peace and strength. It was then that I realized what had happened to the door. I sincerely believe to this day, that a spiritual battle began after I prayed for help. I believe that the Lord put me into the deep sleep because He wanted me out of the battle. I had asked Him to fight it for me and He needed to set me safely aside while He fought off the enemy. Satan did not want to give up his hold easily, but the Lord won. Actually, Satan had no choice but to leave because the battle between good and evil was won long ago on Mount Calvary. I believe that the angel of the Lord opened my front door that day, as he escorted Satan out of my house. All I could do was to kneel and thank Him for His wonderful mercy upon an unworthy servant.

The years have past, and I have never again felt that depression or feeling of oppression again. I have only God to thank.
