Lessons in Trust

"You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.  A thousand shall fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you" (Psalm 91:5-7).

It was during a very dark time in my life that the Lord manifested Himself to me in a miraculous way. My husband and I were in the midst of some desperate years that we spent in financial ruin. In spite of the daily struggles that seemed to multiply, we were trusting in the Lord, knowing that He was in control of our lives and that He would rescue us from our circumstances in His own good time. It was a time of great anxiety, but it was also a very sweet time as we learned to trust Him more and more. We were closer to Him than we had ever been before. Even though the storm raged around us, we were on a mountaintop experience with Him.

One day,  I stopped at a very busy intersection in the large city that we lived in. I was the first one in my lane, waiting to make a right turn. Suddenly, I saw a large truck that was crossing the intersection at a high speed, lose control as it tried to avoid another vehicle that turned directly in front of it. To my amazement, the truck was coming directly at me. I had only a split second to call on the name of Jesus. As I did so, the truck swerved and was able to avoid hitting me. It had come within inches of my car.

A few days later while I was traveling between Los Angeles and Phoenix, again I came close to death on the road. I was traveling at 75 miles per hour on the highway, and just as I passed an eighteen wheeler, one of its tires blew with a massive force that seemed like an explosion. Pieces of rubber and debris flew everywhere. Had I passed that truck just a couple of seconds later, the tire would have exploded right beside me. I learned later that a blow out of that kind is so powerful that it can actually make a hole in the asphalt. Its impact in my car might have caused me to lose control with disastrous results. Again, I saw the hand of God protecting me.

Close to Disaster Five Times

Incredibly, during the next few days, I came close to disaster on the road three more times. In a span of about 10 days, I came close to disaster at least five times. I knew that I was being attacked by Satan, and I began to feel frightened and apprehensive about being on the road. I felt the wrath of the evil one in my life, but as time went by, and I continued to see God’s obvious protection and deliverance in each incident, I began to get a different view of what was happening. Instead of focusing on Satan’s attacks, I began to rejoice in God’s protection. Every time I was delivered from an accident, I experienced anew the power of my merciful Father. In the face of disaster, I saw His almighty hand deliver me time and again. A feeling of blessed security washed over me and sustained me through my troubles.

It was very soon after these incidents took place that the Lord brought us out of our financial problem. His methods of deliverance were so marvelous, that we continue to be sustained by those memories. Nothing can happen to us now that we cannot look back and draw strength and hope from that experience. Our hearts are full of gratitude for His compassion and mercy.
