A recent study by the University of Southern Mississippi reports that exercising for 20-minute stints several times daily can lower sensitivity to anxious feelings. The researchers found aerobic exercise—walking, biking, or swimming—to be the most effective. The harder the workout, the better.
Kristen Vickers-Douglas, Ph.D., a psychologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, says, “Physical activity can help shift attention away from unpleasant or unhelpful thoughts and instead direct attention toward neutral or pleasant thoughts and activities.”
So pack your gym bag or lace up your cross-trainers and walk away from anxiety.
