The Gift

I watched her sheepishly approach with large blue wanting eyes. You see, my 13-year-old daughter discovered that I had a tasty treat that she desired…only an occasional purchase but one that she loved, and here it was, in full view.

My daughter knows that I am a generous person but the reason for her sheepishness had to do with our morning’s previous events. In her new role as a teenage girl, her emotions got the best of her and she had reacted during an encounter with a family member in a rather undesirable way. All was dealt with in a “cause and effect” manner, but then was “forgotten” by her. However, the memory of her behavior must have re-surfaced in her mind as she approached me. It was apparent that she felt sorry and foolish for her previous “character display.”

Spiritual Lesson

As she held out her hands, I filled them with one of her favorite snacks and was instantly reminded of our position as we approach our heavenly Father with our desires, fully aware that we deserve nothing. The thought occurred to me that in my humanness I could’ve asked, “What will you give me for them?” But instead I chose to use this opportunity as a spiritual lesson and said, “These are a gift, not because you deserve them but because I love you.”  She gratefully smiled and once again her peaceful world was restored…..another practical lesson in forgiveness.

The Bible says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God”  (Ephesians 2:8). I believe the Holy Spirit was trying to reach me as well as my daughter because in that small encounter with her, I gained perspective on my current condition as the Creator's child and of all the times I’ve “blown it” in the past. But God tells me as well, “You may not deserve what I have to offer but it is yours as a gift, because I love you."
