As you take your long winter nap, be aware that you might not be sleeping solo. In 84 percent of homes in the U.S., detectable levels of dust-mite allergens were discovered. Dust mites thrive in humid environments and feed on bacteria, pollen, and human skin flakes (thus, they’re commonly found in bedding).
To keep dust mites at bay, researchers advise using a mattress cover and washing bedding every week in hot water. Also, remove all nonwashable items from your place of slumber, and if you live where humidity is high, use a dehumidifier.
